A Day in the Life of Andrew

So every spare minute that I've had the last month or so has been spent on working on an application for some medical assistance with Andrew. I've written novels about his medical history, gotten medical records from all of his doctors (That's 8 specialists in the last 3 states that's we've lived in....that's a lot of medical record requests!) I am so grateful this kid is only four years old because already, his application has been a beast to fill out. Which apparently is one way they weed people out of applying, but after watching the three hour you tube video on how to apply, I'm feeling much more confident and much more overwhelmed. [sigh]

Anyways, I was doing this write up this week on a day in the life of Andrew and thought I should put it here on our blog too. It gives a good realistic look into his life and all that he deals with and how much assistance this kid needs. As I dig through these records, I'm also reminded at the journey we've had the last four years, where he's been and all the mountains he's had to climb to overcome and defy all the expectations the doctors in the NICU set on him. It makes me pretty humbled and incredibly grateful to be his mom and have him in our family. Love this little boy of mine! His spark, his sweet personality, his thought provoking questions,  his determination, his giggles,  his little voice who asks when I get him off the bus at the end of the day. "Mommy are you excited to see me? Did you miss me today?" He melts my heart and tries my patience all in the same moment.  Love this little four year old.
Here's a typical day for him.

The Night Before
Like many children, Andrew thrives on predictability and routine. His bedtime ritual is simple: Around 7:00 P.M., We begin the process. We help him by holding his hand as we walk up the stairs to his bedroom together.  We start by changing his diaper, then having him try to go potty on the toilet. We have to help him with every step. (Walking into the bathroom, pulling his pants down as he holds onto the medical toilet safety railings, stepping up onto the step stool, turning on the faucet to wash his hands, and stepping down to dry his hands.) After he’s tried to go potty, we assist him in getting his pajamas on (getting dressed/undressed independently is a skill he has not mastered)But each night we work on the skills of taking his clothes off and putting his pajamas on.  Then we help him with brushing his teeth, getting a small drink and climbing into his bed. We put on Andrew’s night splints on his legs, read a book and then let him fall asleep. Sometimes this process of getting ready for bed can take 15-20 minutes or sometimes it can take almost 45-60 minutes. Andrew desperately wants to be independent at so many things. He tries so hard to complete tasks like taking his shirt off and pulling his pants up, brushing his teeth, etc.  But he still needs a lot help with all of these self-care skills, and most of the time, the end results are frustration and meltdowns.
The Morning Rush Before School Starts
Mornings are a delicate dance, and every minute counts in getting out the door on time. I handle the mornings solo – I wake Andrew and put on his favorite show, “Curious George”. I find that having this distraction is helpful in going through our morning routine as he’s still waking up and because he needs assistance with dressing, combing his hair, and putting on his socks, braces and shoes. The morning is often dictated by his moods, so I find it easier to help him through the routine and then work on independent skills after school. After we are finished, we head downstairs holding hands to help with his walking down the stairs to get breakfast. He helps me get his spoon and turn on the lights, as I get his breakfast cereal. Again though, lifting him into his chair and buckling him in before he starts eating. Following breakfast we work on his quick homework of tracing or counting objects. I find it easier to do in the morning, when he’s fresh and excited to work. Our after school time is scheduled and busy, so this works best for our family. Usually though, I can expect one or more morning outbursts, but I can't blame him. He's sleepy and I'm marching him through an early routine. Yet almost every time we walk to the bus, his mood lightens and he excitedly runs down our driveway because he loves going to school.
The School Day Begins
Andrew is very fortunate to be a part of a wonderful team of experts who help him during the day. He goes to school each day of the week for 6 ½ hours of school time plus 45 minutes each morning and afternoon on the bus. He is apart of a special needs preschool class.  In addition to the basic IEP team of parents, teachers, principal, and occupational/physical/speech therapists. Andrew also has an aide in his classroom as well as an orthopedic Impairment teacher, who makes sure Andrew is able to get around, function in his classroom environment and access the curriculum along with his same age peers.  She has helped make adaptations in the bathroom, lunchroom and his classroom chair. Andrew also receives daily care from the school nurse, who administers his medication and does a daily assessment while he is in the care of the school. We send Andrew to school each day with his reverse walker.  Here he uses it when going long distances (i.e. to the lunchroom, recess or library etc.) Because of his balance issues, his walker is mostly a visual cue to the other students and a protection for him from the other kids. In the classroom and on the playground Andrew walks independently (with a helmet outside) from activity to activity and can navigate around independently. Although he still falls often, he is in a more protected environment in his small sized classroom.
The Arrival Home After School
When the bus arrives in front of our house, I meet Andrew at the bus door and most days we hop right into the car to head to therapy. He’s happy to go once we are in the car and buckled, but it takes a lot of convincing to get in the car and go. He loves playing outside especially with his walker and just being a kid. After I’ve lifted him into his car seat and buckled him up, those tasks are too difficult to do himself. I hand him a little afterschool snack to eat on the way. We head out dragging his two sisters along with us. Andrew sees three different therapist each week. Tuesday’s are occupational therapy, Wednesday’s are physical therapy and Thursday’s are hippo therapy.
The two days we have “off from therapy” are a nice break from having to manage three kids out of the house. But we try to keep a routine at home and still work on our therapy skills. I usually give Andrew a little bit to unwind and relax after being at school all day. When he gets home, his sisters are usually taking a nap and I can spend some one on one time with him. We talk about his day, read a book or play one of his many imaginative games. After we’ve played for a bit, I pull out my bag of exercises where he pulls 3-4 slips of paper out and we work on three or 4 exercises for the day, plus his daily stretches of his back, hips, hamstrings, calf muscles and his toes.
By this time his sisters are awake and he’s able to play with them. During our after school time we are also working on potty training. Once again this kid tries so much to want to be independent.
Andrew is ambulatory around our house and gets around pretty good. He has to crawl or be carried up the stairs, but he can climb on and off of the couch, his bed (with a step stool) and open and close doors. He still is very unbalanced and still falls a lot. Thankfully now he has learned some protective falling skills and can catch himself with his hands. He’s a pretty good sport about the whole thing and a lot of times just starts laughing at himself. “Did you see that mommy? I’m so silly” are usually the words I hear. But it breaks my heart each time I see him fall.
The Family Time Around the Dinner Table
By 5:00 every night, Andrew is searching around in the pantry for food and asking what’s for dinner, and trying to see what's cooking. The evening meal is an important time when we come together as a family and share our day. Andrew is always willing to try new foods, but he’s struggles with endurance and finishing the food on his plate. Because of this getting enough calories in his day is a constant battle. He is on a high calorie diet because his jaw muscles get tired easily (chewing is a lot of work for him) especially when chewing tough things like meats.  He is able to use a spoon and an open cup, but meal times are still a very messy time for him. We have a lot of spills with the spoon and usually after he's tired of working so hard eating with a spoon, he just dives in and uses his hands to self-feed. Most nights he needs a bath after eating dinner.   Mealtime can also be a struggle for Andrew. He's working so hard at those fine motor tasks and trying to sit in  a chair that he loses interest very quickly and throws his plate and cup on the floor when he’s finished, whether his food is gone or not.
The Post-Dinner Relaxation Before Bedtime
If we're lucky, there are usually 30 minutes to an hour for us to relax and play before bedtime. This time can get taken up by bathing. Up the stairs we head again hand in hand, working on undressing and lifting Andrew in/out of the tub. He loves baths and could spend hours in the tub. Usually, though, this is a time when he and his sisters play with dad. They wrestle on the ground, snuggle on the couch or read books. This is a time with little or no demands on Andrew. Each night after dinner is our family time. This is a time when we all unwind from the day’s pressures, connect with each other, and laugh to our hearts content, before the next day begins and we start the process all over again.

I'm so Glad to live a World where there are Octobers

We sure have had a lot of fun celebrating this year for Halloween!

Andrew has really gotten into the spirit of Halloween more than he ever has. We've had a ball this whole month! It's so hard that Halloween is the VERY last day of the month! He's been asking for a while now "How much longer until Halloween?" Then when it came, his response was, "It's here! It's here! It finally came!"

Parent teacher conference week was the week before Halloween. Andrew had early out days for three days and then Friday off. It was a busy week having him home more, but we got out and played. We went to parks and to a local pumpkin patch! I loved this patch! It was so low key, which is exactly what I was looking for. We've gone to some which are pretty over the top and expensive! This one was perfect for our little family! Complete with a petting zoo with goats, cows and sheep; A hayride around the farm with a lake where we stop and fed the fish, and wagon rides. through  the massive piles of pumpkins!

It's always more fun to ride around in a wagon!

Her scrunchy face kills me!

After dinner one night we were waiting for daddy to come home from work. Since it was a nice warm day, we decided to hang out and enjoy outside. The leaves had just started falling and so we decided to make a little pile to jump into. It was pretty fun to see him get so excited! He remembered the GIANT leaf piles by our apartment last year and when this is all I could rake up for now, He was a little less than impressed. Until we started playing in them...

Pumpkin Carving Adventures! It was quite the adventure this year. We waited and waited until Halloween morning to carve our pumpkins, so that daddy could be home to help us. Then as we started to get into it, we saw on the news that it was going to rain. We had a few outside projects we needed to get done. So we divided and conquered. I put the girls to bed for their morning nap. Andrew and I would finish up the carving and Stephen would head outside. So much for doing this activity with dad....lol!

Andrew kept putting his seeds back inside the pumpkin and wanted to stir it around and make a witches brew. He kills me sometimes!

One semi-family picture before dad heads outside!

I let the girls each try to reach inside and grab the seeds. neither of them were interested in reaching inside.  So that was that with their pumpkin carving experience this year!

It's all fun and games until mommy cuts her thumb and an hour and a half later it's still gushing blood. So a quick trip to the Urgent Care on Halloween! A few stitches later and a very sore thumb I can't use/get wet for a few days. Makes things kind of tricky!

Our Halloween Dinner

Our Spooky Dinner:
Spider mini-Pizzas, Ghost bananas, Garlic breadstick bones and mummy root beer with monster cookies!

Our little Anna...in the dress that mommy sewed... Don't look too close. I made it a little small and it was a bit tricky to get her in and out of it. But it worked well enough for a costume length of wearing. Don't know if I'll try sewing a dress again.

We had the perfect Halloween weather.  Warm enough to not need a jacket, but not blazing hot like Texas where you about sweat to death in your costume. Couldn't have asked for a better day!

The Frozen Gang right before trick or treating!

Can you tell Andrew was anxious to get going? Kathryn is all about walking now and did her best to keep up with her brother!

Andrew really could care less about the candy. He just loves walking around. Usually this kid is so outgoing and can talk up a storm to anybody and everybody. But ask him to say trick or treat for a piece of candy and he clams right up. It was fine though. We went to a handful of houses and hit the neighbors we know and few other families in our neighborhood who are in our ward and called it good. He started to get the hang of it by the end. Then we came home and had him help hand out the candy. I think he enjoyed that more than walking around. I love that we live in a neighborhood with lots and lots of kids! It was such a blast to see the streets full of kids and everyone having such a good time.

So glad it was a nice night! We've been having TONS of rain here in Georgia and will maybe have a day or two each week where it doesn't rain. Thankfully the rain held off for trick or treating and it was warm enough to even go without a coat or a jacket at first then it started to get a little chilly as the night went on. Love this Georgia weather!

This little girl found the stash of candy and had a blast taking it in and out! Gotta love this stage!

It sure is a fun time of the year! And in the words of Anne Shirley, "I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers."

Grandma Lyn & Grandpa Jerry

We were so excited that Grandma & Grandpa could come spend a few days with us! We loved having them here, showing them our new place and neighborhood, celebrating the girls birthday with us and taking a few sightseeing daytrips! Such a wonderful week! We wish we lived closer to family, but we are so grateful that they'll come all this way to visit us! We try to soak in every moment!
Kathryn & Grandma

Grandpa & the Girls
It's getting to be quite the task to hold both girls at the same time. They are getting heavy and so strong and wiggly.

One day, we headed to a beautiful city in the Appalachian Mountains! Helen, Georgia! It was a little taste of Europe right here in Georgia! It was so fun to walk around and enjoy the sights. We had beautiful weather. We got there just in time to enjoy some lunch. We found a quaint little German restaurant that had been highly recommended and boy was it delicious! My parents were in heaven looking through the menu (in German) and reminiscing on their days as missionaries in Austria. It all looked so good we each ordered a different item and let everyone sample from everyone. My dad said that they had the best rot kraut (a red cabbage salad) he's eaten in the states. Now that's a pretty high compliment, I'd say.

They had all sorts of fun shops and alley was that were so quaint. Andrew loved exploring them all.

These two were troopers and had a nice long nap in the stroller. That never happens with these girls.

The Christmas shop and glass blowing shop were my favorites, but Stephen loved getting some delicious fudge.

They had some beautiful parks!

Our other Adventure was to the Georgia Aquarium! Yep one of our Georgia favorites!

Andrew was excited to show Grandma & Grandpa the penguins, They went to the South Pole earlier this year on a trip with some friends and brought back Andrew some stuffed penguins! He loves finding the penguins each time we go to the aquarium now.

Resting with Grandpa!

Since it was the off season and we hit it in the afternoon after all the school groups had left there was hardly anybody there. I had to convince Andrew a little, but he thought it was fun to touch the starfish and said it felt spongy

Since it was a beautiful day, we took a little walk around downtown and Coca-Cola World (Coke's World Headquarters right next door to the aquarium)

It's always hard to say goodbye! My dad help us build some shelves for a closet and my mom helped decorate a little bit. They even watched the kids one night so Stephen and I could slip away for a little date to the movies! We loved having them here and Andrew asks all the time when we can go and visit. We are so blessed to have wonderful parents!
Thanks for a wonderful visit mom & dad!

It's been a year and we survived!!!

Happy 12 months old to our sweet baby girls! Where has the time gone!

I've decided that life exponentially gets faster and faster with each child...By having twins as my 2nd and 3rd. I can not believe how life is racing by so quickly!

We just love these girls so much and we love how their little personalities shine!

Birthday Hugs with Grandma!

We had a fun day!  The girls woke up with a bunch of balloons in their room! They weren't really sure what all this was! But they had a lot of fun playing with them!

It was such a beautiful day we had to go for a walk!

It was fun to have my mom here and help me get ready for the celebrations!

Once daddy was home from work! The celebrations began!!

Birthday Dinner!

These girls were loved with lots of presents and cards from family! Andrew was so excited it was their birthday and wanted to stay home from school to celebrate! It took a lot of convincing, but he finally realized that we would not open presents and have the party until after he got home from school. He was a good little helper in opening up presents!

He did understand that these gifts were for the girls, but he just couldn't wait to try out their new push car!

We decided to try to do a little cake smash with these girls! We got them dressed up and tried to take some cute pictures! These girls didn't know what all this fuss was about. I just have to laugh at their reaction to the birthday cake! Neither of them knew what to do with it.

Olivia was just her happy little self. She poked at it a little bit, maybe tried a little taste, but didn't really think much of it. She mostly just waved her arms and kicked her feet which went right into the cake.

Kathryn was a bit sad. She hadn't taken good naps that day and the next day woke up with a fever. So I don't think she was feeling to well by the end of the night. She sat for a bit and got into it more than Olivia, but only just a few fingers got frosting on them. Then she had had enough and just started crying! Poor thing.

A little bit about Kathryn right now..
  • She is all about walking. She will cruise along the walls, couches, cupboards etc. you name it and she'll do it! She'll push anything and everything around the stools, the high chair, push toys, Andrew's walker, etc. She's getting more and more brave and has unknowingly taken 3-5 steps here and there the last few weeks to try to get at something, but then she loses confidence and drops down to crawl.
  • She just had two more teeth break through to make a total of 8 teeth.
  • She is a little bottomless pit, when it comes to meal time. She will devour anything and everything we set on her tray. I almost can't keep up with how fast she eats and grabs things a handful at a time. She's like a little chipmunk, because this girl finds every nook and cranny to put food into those cheeks. She definitely out eats both her brother and her sister!
  • Her laugh is the best little belly laugh I've ever heard. And she'll laugh at most everything.
  • Any time we hear music this girl is moving up and down to dance to it! So so cute!
  • Her latest passion is to climb stairs. Our gate at the bottom of the stairs was getting loose from a 4-year old shaking it and sometimes wouldn't latch completely tight. I caught her a few times all the way upstairs and playing in my bathroom.(Don't worry we've tightened the gate.) Although, this newly found skill has come in handy as it's getting harder and harder to carry both babies at the same time. I'll have her climb the stairs and I'll follow closely behind with Olivia.

  • She loves to be chased and will get giggly and just fall on her tummy laughing!
  • She loves the bath and splashing in the water. But she loves even more is snuggling in the towel after she gets out.

  • She loves sleeping with random things. Her crib is right by the hamper and when it's full, she'll pull things out into her crib and fall asleep with them in her grasp.
  • She is still the most easy going little girl. I honestly didn't know babies came in such an easy packages!
  • She says mama, daddy, uh-oh, mah (for more) and nana (for banana)

A little bit about Olivia right now...

  • She's a mommy's girl and my little cuddly one.
  • She becoming a girly girl. It's so fun to watch. She'll try to comb her hair,  and put on sunglass and necklaces. She'll also find her shoes and carry them around.
  • Standing on her head is also a new found love! She is hilarious and I catch her trying to do it herself all the time!
  • We've named her the dainty eater...even though she's starving she'll pick things up one at a time and slowly chew it. She is a lover of fruits and yogurt. Depending on the day doesn't always like noodles or eggs or cheese.
  • She lOVES books! She could sit and look at books for a very long time and I love it.
  • We are waiting and waiting, but this girl still only has her two bottom teeth.
  • She's always got to be carrying something around. A lot of times it's in her hand, usually one of Andrew's matchbox cars or his Daniel Tiger figurines. But more often it's in her mouth like a puppy dog....she'll take off her socks or shoes or find random toys and carry them around in her mouth.
  • She says mama first thing in the morning when she wakes up.
  • She has a few words like mama and nana (for banana) but she uses sign language more to communicate. She'll sign more, all done and milk.
  • This girl loves to use a spoon! She always has to have a spoon in her hand and will try to scoop her food up off her tray during meals. She is getting pretty good at it too and is successful most of the time. She just doesn't know what to do next, so she'll pick the food off the spoon with her hands and eat it.
  • She loves to clap! If she hears clapping on the TV or if I say 'Yea' that's her cue to start clapping!
  • She also loves to spin around in a circle on her bum. She use her legs to spin herself around and around and around...especially when she's on the wood or tile floors. She can get going pretty fast.

It's so fun to see their personalities developing and see how they interact with each other.

Kathryn is still the more easy going one, but she sure let's herself be known in other ways. She is always the one taking the toys away from Olivia. She's very determined and knows what she wants. She'll push and squeeze her way through just about anything to get to what she wants. So far Olivia has been pretty good about just finding other toys, but I know that won't last much longer.

These two are both still pretty good sleepers. They sleep through the night and most days take two good naps about 1-2 hours long. Although we'll see how long two naps are going to stick around. Andrew lasted until he was almost in 18 months before he needed only one nap, but these two just play and play and play in their cribs. They have a harder time settling down with a playmate in the next crib over. It's playtime ALL the time! It's actually really cute to watch, but it's getting harder and harder for them to settle down for naptime. They just have too much fun with each other playing Peek-a-boo and handing things to each other between the railings.
They really are the best little playmates!

This picture is so funny. Olivia actually crawled herself into that trap, but Kathryn was just sitting there laughing at her.

Olivia although might be a bit more vocal. She is also more sensitive. She tries to hold Kathryn's hand while they are in the stroller....especially after their one year old appointments and had their shots! These girls screamed for almost 20 minutes. When I finally got them strapped in their stroller, Olivia just kept reaching for Kathryn's hand for comfort. Though, Kathryn was too upset to even want to hold hands.

This has become a favorite past time with these two. Kathryn loves to push and Olivia loves to ride. It's a great way to entertain the two and it keeps them occupied for quite sometime.

The swing is the favorite at the park!!! It also contains them into one spot! It's a win win for mommy...right?

Love them Both! Can't imagine our crazy life without them!!
