We haven't really gotten out of our house very much the past few weeks and for good reason. If you've stopped by to visit... you might have found Stephen doing some fancy stunts.
If you can't tell from the picture, there are two big black walking casts on his feet. About 2 weeks ago Stephen had surgery on both of his feet. Yes, we did both at the same time. Stephen's always had problems with his feet his whole life and was incredible tired of feeling like "an old man" (as he would put it) after being on them.
Back in June I decided to make an appointment for another foot doctor just to get a second, third or fourth opinion. Well sure enough, this doctor confirmed his condition 'Tarsal Coalition' but then remarked that it can be corrected through a surgery. This was the first doctor to ever mention it being something that can be fixed. This really got Stephen excited. Within a few weeks we found out that our insurance would pay 100% and so we canceled our plans to spend time with family in Michigan and scheduled this.
We were first told that it could be up to 2-4 weeks before he could start walking again and were prepared for the worst. But after a few follow-up appointments, the doctor has been very optimistic. It was a rough first few days with incredible amounts of pain and some pretty strong meds. With having both feet done it's posed for some creative thinking of how to do things (ie. go to the bathroom, get in and out of the wheelchair, get up and down the stairs, get dressed, shower etc......) We've also realized that our house is not wheelchair friendly. Stephen's been pretty optimistic about it all and patient with me helping him do all of those things. It's kept us busy the past few weeks and poor Stephen's watched as many movies and played as many computer games as he can possibly handle.
So after only two weeks the doctor took stitches out and wants Stephen to walk around as much as the pain will allow. He also wants him to try not to wear the walking casts either. We'll see if we can get his swollen feet with 3 inch incisions on each foot, into some type of shoe. We haven't tried that yet...
We are sure grateful for the good news and speedy recovery! What a blessing with school starting in less than a month.
