Things I've learned living in Washington the last 6 months

It's hard to believe we've been in our home in Washington for almost 6 months...

I will be honest, it's been a hard transition for our little family. The hardest moved we've made over the last few years, but the doors that were opened and how the whole situation worked out that brought our family to Washington, I have no doubt this is where we need to be right now in our lives. It is completely different than Georgia, and in someways I really miss living in the South. But there are some unique things about living here in Seattle!

1. Rain Rain Rain. I've been told a few things.... Seattle's rain festival is from January 1-December 31st. with 9months of rain and 3 months of showers. Winter is supposedly the wet and rainy season and summer doesn't start until July here. Quiet a bit different weather than Georgia and it's going to take a while to get use to it. I honestly went months without seeing the sun. When we moved here we read that Seattle and Atlanta's average rainfall per year with roughly the same. However, in Atlanta it downpours fast and here it's a constant slow drizzle over about 9 months.

Splashing in puddles has become a favorite of the kids. If you ask Andrew it's his favorite thing to do at recess and he LOVES the rain!

2. Sun Setting- In November/December it was extremely dark all the time. It was crazy!  The sun would set right about when Andrew would get off the bus at 4 pm and It wouldn't rise the next morning until he left for school after 8 am. It made for long days and will take a few years to get use to that....but on the flip side, we have some long wonderful summer days. Even now in just the beginning of May. It's getting light at about 5:45 am and it doesn't set until after 8:30 pm. So really the summer months are going be super hard to get the kids to bed when it doesn't set until 10 pm. The sunsets on the waterfront are gorgeous though! It's so fun to live close to the water.

3. Umbrellas...For living in a place where it rains non-stop...you rarely see an umbrella. Most people around here don't use umbrellas and they say you can spot a tourist when you see one. My kids(and I)  have pretty much lived in raincoats and rain boots this winter. We just bundle up and head out. The rain doesn't stop us from much....because it here every day!

4. You can see Mt. Rainier from just about anywhere...even from the city. It's 14,000 foot volcano and it feels like it's literally right out my front door. So beautiful!

5. The wildlife....It's been fun to see frogs in our yard this spring, but the moles I could do without. We have loved watching the bald eagles fly around everywhere up here and have two that live in some trees behind our house and we see them quite often. We also love that a 30 minute drive to the beach we can find crabs, hermit crabs, and other sea life. Last month we saw some sea lions swimming along the shore and on my bucket list here in Washington is to see some orca whales in the wild. Apparently there are a few pods that live in the Puget Sound so the chances are good.
Tide-pooling and finding crabs

6. The waterways affect traffic. The Seattle area is surrounded by water: The Sound, Lake Washington, Lake Union, and many smaller passageways. We seem to cross bridges all the time and my kids love to find the different bridges we have to cross. We've learned to love the beauty the water brings to the landscape, but curse it at the same time as the traffic is horrible (as with all big cities). It sometime makes it difficult to get across town quickly.

7. Seafood is a way of life. Every where we go, I try to embrace where we are living at. The culture, the scenery, the food, the people and just soak it all in. When a friend of ours found out I don't really like seafood, he made it his goal to help me like it....haha! So one night we went on a date and to a nice seafood place in Seattle and he ordered quite the spread... And I was so brave I tried raw oyster, crab legs and crab claws, shrimp, scallops and mussels. I almost can't believe it.. I wouldn't say I loved it, but most of it wasn't terrible. The crab....I would say that was good...especially the claws.

9. The city shuts down at the sight of snow. We were told that Seattle only gets about 1 snowstorm a year (about the same as Atlanta) I lost track this year as to how many snowstorms we got...maybe about 7 or 8. Plus on top of that we had a bunch of late starts with school because of rain turning to ice during the night. Needless to say it's been a freezing cold winter and we are huge wimps! Everyone here say what an awful and unusual winter it's been. We've wondered why we left the south and the awesome southern winters a number of times this last little while.

A Storm in February we got over a foot of snow in one night. They canceled school for 2 days and it took almost a week to melt away. We haven't seen snow like this since we lived in Utah almost 6 years ago!

The kids had a blast playing in it for a few days.

They say that this winter has been very unusual and not a typical Seattle winter. We broke record and got almost 4 feet of rain from October -April....now that's as deep as a small swimming pool. Along the Olympic coast they've received over 10 feet of rain... craziness!

I would have never thought I would have lived in so many major cities around the country. I have grown so much with every move and have loved seeing and getting to know the different places. But it's truly the people and friends that make it what it is and we've made some pretty great friends here already. It's been a fun adventure.

Two and a half

We just love these girls!

They have both Stephen and I wrapped around our finger.

At two and a half these two are smart, busy, into everything, get into trouble together, make more messes than I can count, give the best hugs, are talking more and more every day, take toys from each other, watch out for each other at the park, pretend to be dogs, monsters, princesses and dinosaurs, help each other put on their shoes and find their coats, they both can out run me, and tickle and giggle with each other. They are quite the duo and are best friends.....and nobody ever believes me that they are twins because they are so different. Different in size, in looks and in personality. Here's what they are doing at age 2 1/2....

Olivia:
  • This girl loves to be held and whenever she wants me to pick her up she'll say "Mommy, I need a hug" and every single time my heart melts and I pick her up. I'm truly trying to cherish these moments, because I know they do not last long.
  • She is a major chocolate lover....I have to hide it or she will throw a major tantrum. Every time she asks for milk, she always asks for "chocolate milk, PLLEEEAASSSSE!
  • She knows all of her colors pretty well and even gray, gold and peach.
  • She is our peacemaker in the family and has a sweet heart. She's always will say "sorry mommy, I'm sorry" and want a hug.  If Andrew falls or is mad over something. She will go and find a toy or something to give to him to help him be happy. Most of the time it's random things, but it still amazes me.
  • She can pretty much dress and undress herself. We go through a few different outfits a day.
  • Her favorite color is purple.
  • Rapunzel is her favorite princess....because she is purple.
  • She loves to have daddy put her to bed and it's a sad night when he can't.
  • She is picky eater, she loves veggies and fruit, crackers, chips, cold cereal, pancakes, grilled cheese and occasionally hot dog, chicken nugget, yogurt or rice....that's about the extent of her diet these days.
  • She weighs 26 lbs. (don't know her exact height)
  • She it starting to get the concept of sharing...having to practice all day, everyday it's starting to sink in with her and if her and Kathryn are fighting over something, she'll be the one to let go and come to me and say, "Mommy, set a timer, my turn?" Her sister on the other hand....not so much.
  • Her favorite songs are, "Jesus wants Me for A Sunbeam" "Daddy's Homecoming" and "Head Shoulders, Knees and Toes."
  • She loves to read and her favorite book is "Put me in the Zoo" and "What Makes a Rainbow?"
  • She is my helper and loves to help me around the house. She'll be the first to go get a rag when something has spilled, whether it was her or somebody else. Her favorites chores are to help match socks when I'm folding laundry and to sweep, clean windows/mirrors and scrub toilets. She will always dump the dustpan into the garbage and will tell me. "I do it mommy, it's my job."
  • She loves having her hair done and if I'm sitting on the floor she'll grab a brush and want to comb my hair and put clips and flowers in it too.

Kathryn:

  • Kathryn's totally into counting. We count everything. From the steps we climb to the number of buses we pass on the road. She likes to count anything she can get her hands on and line things up and count them. It's pretty cute!
  • Whenever we are in the car and see a school bus, she will always say, "I found it! I found it! I found Andrew"  It's so fun!                                                                                                   3
  • She my strong willed child. Getting dressed is a huge chore.
  • She is a lover of food! She can't chew fast enough...ever. She also loves to help me in the kitchen and is actually a good little helper. I can really give her some simple things and she'll actually do them pretty well.
  • She hates having her hair done, but LOVES to brush her teeth. or maybe it's that pink bubble gum toothpaste! I caught her hiding in the bathroom with the lights off just licking the toothpaste tube. I don't know how much she actually ate, but I seriously couldn't believe it.
  • She loves to be wrapped up in her "kankies" (blankies) and cuddled and held/rocked like a baby. Once in a while, she'll hand them to me and say "Baby, baby, baby" and she wants to be held like that. It doesn't happen very often, but I love it when she wants to cuddle.
  • Her favorite books are "Hand Hand Fingers Thumb" and "The Big Hungry Bear and the Red Ripe Strawberry!"
  • She loves to sing and other than Frozen and Moana songs, Her favorites are "I'm a child of God" "E-I-E-I-O" and "Wheels on the Bus"
  • This little girl is non-stop always on the go. She loves to jump, climb, slide, and run around.
  • She is Andrew's little shadow in everything he does and says. She still cries when he leaves on the bus and can't wait to get her shoes on and go and get him off the bus to welcome him home every day.
  • I've given up in the nap department. I've tried everything with this girl. I've laid down with her, tried sleeping in different beds, putting a crib tent on, taking blankets and toys away...nothing has worked to get her to nap. So after a 3-4 months I threw in the towel and we have quiet time every day. It only lasts about 30-45 minutes. But I cherish those few minutes to get a few things done. She still needs one desperately and at about 3pm-6pm she is cranky and unreasonable. She also gets board pretty fast without her playmate and I really have to watch her or she'll run into Olivia's room and wake her up.
  • This girl is all about painting her nails. She looooves it! And sometimes, maybe sometimes I use it as my bribe for certain things....like getting dress. Hey, it works like a gem. :)
  • She gives the best hugs. Arms literally wrapped around your neck cheek to cheek and squeezes with all her might. I love getting them every single morning when she comes down the stairs.
  • She is a jumper and a climber. Oh my goodness she has reached new heights in our house and jumps on anything and everything. One of the things to redirect this is to pull out a book. She loves books and will settle right down and really spends time just looking at and pouring over the pictures. I'm glad there is one thing that will calm her down...it gives me a little hope. :)

Where have my little babies gone? These two are such blessings in our lives! We love them so much and I'm so grateful they are apart of our family!

New Year and a New Start

I've been summoned by a few family members to update the blog... I honestly didn't think much of anyone read it, but I'm glad to hear that at least someone does. It's been a great way for me to journal and write things down that I want to remember. My kiddos are growing way to fast and I love the stage they are in right now. So I guess here's to a new start on writing down a few things that have happened the last few months!

January was a super cold around here. It wasn't light for very many hours during the winter and then even when the sun was up it was cloudy most of the time. So when we did see the sun we tried to bundle up and enjoy it. Most days we froze....we are not use to the cold living in the south.

Andrew started another round of swimming lessons. We've been doing swimming at therapy 2-3 times a month and it's really been helping him.

Stephen and I celebrated 10 years!! It's hard to believe it's been that long! It's been a fun and exciting journey with this guy! He is my better half and so perfect for me! Love him! We decided to celebrate with a evening in the city! He surprised me with reservations at the Spaceneedle for dinner and then a walk around the Seattle Center and the Chinhuly Gardens.

I started a new adventure and was hired to teach English online to kids in China! It's been super fun and I have really loved it and have enjoyed getting back into teaching a bit. I love that I can teach from my computer a few hours a week while my kids are asleep. I get up early which means, I go to be shortly after my kids do...hence the blog has taken a bit of a break.

February we had a major snow storm that hit us....I'm used to spring weather this time of year with the tulips starting to bloom, so this took us all by surprise. We got over a foot of snow and had a few days off of work and school. We didn't know what to do, because we don't even own a snow shovel. The kids loved playing in the snow and building a tall snowman. It kept them entertained for hours. It was the perfect snow too! Now we have realized that we need to invest in a snow shovel.

Andrew took me to The Sweetheart's Dance at his school. I seriously had so much fun with this kid. He is the best little dancer and we had fun seeing all of his friends and teachers. This kid is so social, he's got so many friends, kids and adults. I swear everybody in the school knows him. But his school is pretty small...there's only 400 kids in the entire K-5th grade.

March was a busy month, we decided to start working on our back yard...yes another back yard project of putting in an entire backyard! We have realized that we really haven't had a backyard for our kids in almost 3 years. We lived in an apartment for a year, then when we bought our home in Georgia, our backyard was steep and unusable, then we tore it up to try to remedy that problem. Then we moved about 2 weeks after we finished the huge project. Then we were in another apartment and now we have just a bunch a dirt and rocks back there. So we started with our fence and got that installed, then we decided to hire out some of the work...well with all of the rain we've had, it's been a huge mess and well...we're still in the process of trying to get it all finished. Someday we'll have a backyard with grass for our kids.... Someday....
The before.

Putting in the sprinklers and even in March getting more snow!

They dumped about 6 loads of dirt into pools of water from the rain. Which caused a lot of problems....

Now we are just waiting for it to dry out long enough to work on it and

We also had a lot of visitors come stay with us during March and the beginning of April and we celebrated Andrew's birthday. Both of which I'll have to write more details on different posts. But for now here's a little catch up post! :)

Our Surprise Thanksgiving

Driving 12 hours in the car was totally worth surprising my parents for Thanksgiving! My mom had the best reaction! I had told just my two sisters and we texted on our way down checking in. Then just about as we got to Parley's Canyon a terrible storm came a long. It was a crazy last hour, but we finally made it! And had a wonderful holiday with family!

Our Thanksgiving Feast!

Playing in the tons of snow! So much fun! The first time the girls have ever played in the snow....and we lacked a little bit of snow clothes. Cousins were nice to share, but we didn't last long with no snow pants for the girls. The cabin has the best sledding hills lots of giggles and laughs from everyone!

It was the first time we had everyone single person in our family together for Thanksgiving in about 5 years.
